As frightening as it is to think about the affects that the outdoor air quality  may have on your health, the United States EPA considers indoor air quality one of the greatest single factors contributing to ill health. Indoor pollution can easily be ten times more polluted than outdoor air. This is not surprising if you think of the many toxic substances that are kept confined in our ultra-insulated homes and offices. Consider the fact that carbon monoxide will kill you if breathed in a confined area, but mixed with the atmosphere it becomes far less dangerous.  

There has been an alarming growth in asthma, allergic reaction, cancer and respiratory diseases that has not been seen in previous generations. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimateds that there were 17.3 million asthmatics in the United States in 1998 compared with 6.8 in 1980 and that the increase was due to air pollution.  

To reduce indoor pollution:
                         ■       Ventilate your home. Open windows or install fans that will continuously exchange stale air with fresh.
                         ■        Remove products that outgass harmful chemicals into the air.  This includes most carpeting, laminates, wood veneers and products made from petrochemicals.                               ■       When you paint, use no or low-VOC products.
                         ■        Remove wallpaper.                         
                         ■        Add house plants, as they remove toxic chemicals in the air.
