![]() Growing “GREEN” Buying “GREEN” By Roland Kemler Studies indicate that over the past 5 years the sales of organic and all natural products have increased 18% to 25%. It is estimated that up to 30% of American consumers are willing to pay up to a 20% premium on clean, green products over non-sustainable alternatives...and that number grows each year. For many consumers the products of choice are environmentally responsible, natural and organic. Open a magazine; check the news, surf the web or turn on the TV, and a day does not go by where consumers are not reminded of the importance of the Environment and Sustainability. The green concept also has entered the construction industry -- studies show that building green and green renovations, can lower utility costs and increase productivity while reducing the impact on the environment, according to the U.S. Green Building Council. A recent decline in cost to develop solar energy, coupled with an emphasis on clean, domestic energy development, tell us that sustained growth in solar energy development will be increasingly important as we look to supply clean domestic power within the United States in the coming years. Here are a few TIPS for buying green: 1. Look for recycled products. ("recovered materials" or "postconsumer materials") 2. Buy energy efficient products. (Products with the energy star Label) 3. Use canvas bags when shopping. There are also cotton canvas bags you can purchase for your produce. (most stores will give you a discount for using your own bags) 4. Buy your own water bottles and a water distiller. (You have the comfort of knowing there is no chlorine, fluoride, bacteria, viruses, pesticides, or lead. You will also eliminate the use of plastics and will probably see a savings from purchasing bottled water. 5. Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescents. (The compact fluorescent bulb will last 10 times longer, while producing half the amount of CO2 in its lifetime). There are many more things you can do to support your green life but this will help you get started. The choices we make today will help change our planet to become a cleaner and environmentally safer place to live. Our footprints will last forever so make them lasting Impressions.
